Enjoy Delicious Heirloom Tomatoes Despite Covid - Try Making Sauces & Salads With Stored Tomatoes

Covid has wreaked havoc on many aspects of life, and one of the most unfortunate casualties is the flavor of heirloom tomatoes. Recently, a couple was struck with Covid and in the days since, their taste buds have gone missing. This means that all the delicious varieties of heirloom tomatoes they had grown - Brandywine, Polish, Dester, Indian Stripe, Vladyka, King Kong, AGP, and Lucky Cross - now taste like styrofoam.

This is an incredibly disheartening experience for any tomato lover. While it may be a great time to enjoy Evil Olive and Purple Calabash tomatoes, these are not quite the same as the beloved heirlooms. Unfortunately, even if someone could send them out to another person, it seems that this is not always successful. A recent attempt to send some Desters to a brother in New Hampshire ended in failure; UPS simply reported that “they didn’t make it”.

The only variety that can boast a long shelf-life is Joyce Dockter Heirloom Tomatoes from Ukraine, which come from the late Dr. Carolyn Tomato Collection. However, this does not help those who are currently suffering from Covid and unable to work hard in their gardens. The best way forward is to focus on getting better so that next year they can get back to growing and enjoying their favorite heirloom tomatoes again.

It is important to remember that while Covid has taken away many things we love, there will be brighter days ahead when we can once again savor the flavors of our favorite heirloom tomatoes. Until then, we must take care of ourselves and hope for the best.In the meantime, there are still ways to enjoy heirloom tomatoes. For example, one can try making a tomato sauce with canned or frozen tomatoes and adding some of their favorite herbs and spices for flavor. Or they could make a simple salad using cherry or grape tomatoes that have been stored in the refrigerator.

Finally, it is important to remember that Covid has not taken away our ability to appreciate good food - even if we cannot taste it as well as before.
